the use of er in dutch is more common than in english ,in the place that er cannot be used in dutch , it can be used   in english
in occasions, er can be omitted but the dutch ear prefers a repletive er construction whereever possible.

structure:

er + zijn/zit/staat/loopt

er zit een muis in de hoek
repletive er is commonly used in the passive construction that there is no subject, er wordt geklopt

er wordt te veel geroddeld

er werd heel weinigt gedanced
